Championship league leaders Leicester City have been impressive throughout the second tier campaign, and are deserving of their top spot status. But two consecutive defeats for Enzo Maresca's men have seen their once overwhelming lead shrink to just six points. On Friday night, the Foxes fell to a defeat at the hands of Leeds United , who will now fancy their title credentials having done the double over the current leaders. Centre-back Wout Faes established a lead for the Foxes, which they took with them to half-time, but late strikes from Connor Roberts and Archie Gray, followed by Patrick Bamford's stoppage time goal in which he turned in Dan James' free-kick secured a win for the Whites.
The Foxes will regret their missed opportunity to have established a bigger lead at the top of the table, while the Whites will believe they can chase Maresca's side down. The league leaders may also feel as though they were wasteful on Friday night, as according to FotMob , they had 16 shots at Elland Road but registered just five on target.
Maresca's men were not clinical enough to defeat Daniel Farke's side on Friday, but Foxes supporters will look back on the 73rd minute as the moment when they should have gone up and sealed all three points against their closest title rivals.
This move just seven minutes before the Whites' equaliser had all the makings of a classic Foxes counter-attack, but when Ricardo Pereira played the ball through to Patson Daka, the Zambian forward squandered his opportunity and fired wide from inside the area.
Daka had already had a goal disallowed for offside earlier in the second half, but this miss was a clear turning point in the match. And if it proves to be a turning point in the title race and the Whites go on to pip the Foxes to the title having now closed the gap, it will be this moment that Foxes fans look back on.
The Championship is a division whereby matches and even league titles are often decided via fine margins and this miss from Daka could prove to be another example of that, whereas the Foxes would surely have claimed all three points had he taken his chance.
Daka wasn't even in Maresca's plans earlier in the season, with the Italian rotating Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho up-top, but when a deadline day transfer away in the summer fell through, the Zambia international was left out in the cold. Since the start of December though, Daka has played a key part in the Championship with 11 goal contributions in 12 appearances - it should have really been an eight goal of the campaign for year-old though at Elland Road, and that miss could prove very costly.
The beginning of spring time welcomes the business end of the Football League season, and as such next month is a crucial one for Maresca's team who will hope that they can take giant steps towards securing their Championship title.
Meanwhile, there are also some tricky fixtures up ahead for the Foxes, whose next league fixture sees them face an in-form QPR side who will be hoping to further enhance their survival credentials after jumping out of the relegation zone with a win over Rotherham.
